Message from Vice President and Chief of the Office for Gender Equality

Iwate University has literally seamlessly been taking comprehensive measures to promote gender equality since the establishment of the Office for Gender Equality in 2008. Such measures include Iwate University Declaration on Promotion of Gender Equality, adoption of the Iwate University Plan of Action for Gender Equality and implementation of the Programs to Support Research Activities of Female Researchers with funds from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.

Despite these efforts, Iwate University's proportion of women among faculty members remains 10.9% (as of May 1, 2014) which is below national average. Women's proportion among administrative staff is even lower and the situation requires serious efforts.

In "Contributing to Iwate's Post-Disaster Reconstruction through Supporting Female Researchers", one of the Programs to Support Research Activities of Female Researchers that the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology funds and Iwate University has implemented since 2013, Iwate University partners with two universities, two national colleges of technology and four public research institutions in our region to improve support mechanism for all faculty, staff and students regardless of sex and gender, enhance research skills of female researchers and students, motivate female students, and raise awareness towards better support system for female researchers and gender equality. In the Iwate University Plans of Actions for Gender Equality (2013-3017), we prioritize management from gender equality perspective, improvement of support mechanisms for work-life balance, gender equality education for our students, promotion of gender equality in research activities, and dissemination of the latest information on our measures for gender equality to local communities. MEXT-funded program and the Action Plan supplement each other in promoting gender equality in Iwate University.

Female students would not be able to have hope for their future without active women around them. I firmly believe "Contributing to Iwate's Post-Disaster Reconstruction through Supporting Female Researchers" program not only helps to increase the proportion of women among faculty members but also helps empower women in whole Iwate. I hope you'll support our measures to promote gender equality.

Thank you.

Vice President, Iwate University
