Research Students

As preparation for applying to a graduate or doctoral program at Iwate University, students may register as a research student beforehand. As it is usually difficult to pass the entrance examination in the Japanese language without proper preparation, many prospective students register as research students for 6 months.

Qualifications for Undergraduate Programs

Those with a bachelor's degree or with the academic skills equivalent to completing two-years or more of study at college.

Graduate Programs (Master's)

Those with a Master's degree or those admitted with equivalent academic skills

Graduate Programs (Doctoral)

Those with a Doctoral degree or those admitted with equivalent academic skills

Period

Up to one year.

Spring Enrolment : (6 month course) April 1 - September 30
(1 year course) April 1 - March 31
Fall Enrolment : (fall semester only) October 1 - March 31

Timeline for Admission

Applications from abroad

Graduate from an undergraduate or graduate program.

Find a research area of interest.
(The research topics of our researchers, which can be found in the Directory of Faculty and Researchers on the Iwate University website, will be of help in writing your research proposal. Most email addresses are also available, so you can contact the researcher directly to discuss your research plan and the possibility of being accepted as a research student.)

Submit the application documents.
(Application forms are available the prior academic year, in October for spring enrolment and in May for fall enrolment.)

  • Spring Enrolment: Mid-October - End of October
  • Fall Enrolment: Mid-May

After acceptance and receiving your decision to attend the university, the International Office of Iwate University will apply for the Certificate of Eligibility at the Sendai Immigration Office, Morioka Branch.

  • Spring Enrolment: End of November
  • Fall Enrolment: August

The applicant will then apply for a visa at a Japanese embassy abroad, come to Japan, and complete the admission procedure at the International Office of Iwate University.

  • Spring Enrolment: End of March
  • Fall Enrolment: End of September

Applications from residents in Japan

Graduate from an undergraduate or graduate program.

  • Fall Enrolment: End of July - Beginning of August

Upon receiving notification of acceptance, complete the admission procedure at the Student Service Section of Iwate University.

  • Spring Enrolment: End of March
  • Fall Enrolment: End of September

Enrol at Iwate University.

  • Spring Enrolment: Beginning of April
  • Fall Enrolment: Beginning of October
