Coming of Age Day (成人の日)

In your country, at what age do you consider a person to have reached adulthood? Are you familiar with the concept of "Coming of Age Day"?

Coming of Age Day, or Seijin no Hi (成人の日), is a national holiday in Japan that takes place on the second Monday of January each year. This year, 2025, it takes place on Monday, January 13th. This day celebrates the transition to adulthood for young men and women who have reached the age of 20. It marks an important milestone, as individuals at this age are legally recognized as adults, taking on new responsibilities and roles in society. Since April 2022, however, the legal age of adulthood in Japan has been lowered from 20 to 18, allowing younger individuals to assume adult privileges, such as voting and signing contracts.

The origins of Coming of Age Day can be traced back to the 8th century, when the Crown Prince of Japan symbolized his transition to adulthood by changing his clothing and hairstyle. Over time, this custom evolved into a significant national celebration. Today, local governments across Japan organize special ceremonies to honor young people who have turned or will turn 20 during the year. These ceremonies vary depending on the region and may take place at different venues, often including speeches, parades, or other community events.

On this day, it is common to see young women dressed in the furisode (振袖), a formal kimono with bright, colorful patterns and long sleeves. The furisode is traditionally worn by unmarried women and is seen as a symbol of their readiness for marriage. Young men, on the other hand, may wear either a suit or the hakama, a traditional garment consisting of wide-legged pants. The hakama was once the standard attire for men, and it remains a popular choice for formal occasions and traditional ceremonies, including those related to Japanese martial arts such as Aikido, Kendo, and Iaido.

The celebration of Coming of Age Day serves as a reminder of the important life transition from adolescence to adulthood. It emphasizes the growing responsibilities that come with reaching legal adulthood and encourages reflection on the changes that accompany this stage of life.
