Tohoku Summer Festival (東北夏祭り)
After all the hard work of exams, it's time to relax and enjoy the holiday season. The summer festival is here just in time for you to unwind and have some fun!
In early August, Morioka City comes alive with the Sansa Odori Festival, which runs from August 1st to 4th. This event features lively Japanese drumming and graceful dancing in celebration of Iwate Prefecture. Originally held to honor deities who defeated demons, the festival now pays tribute to Mitsuishi Shrine. The highlight is the Sansa Parade, where over 30,000 dancers and taiko drummers fill the streets.
Besides the Sansa Festival, each province in Japan has its own unique festivals. Today, let's explore some of the exciting festivals in the Tohoku region. The Tohoku Summer Festival, or the summer festivals of the Tohoku region, is a lively celebration in Japan's northeastern area. Running from late July to August, it features a variety of traditional events, performances, and activities that highlight the region's unique culture and local traditions. Dive into the vibrant culture of Tohoku and experience its rich heritage through these festivals. Some of the highlights include:
Aomori Nebuta Matsuri:
The Aomori Nebuta Festival, held in Aomori City, is renowned for its stunning illuminated floats called nebuta. These floats are beautifully decorated with colorful designs of historical and mythical figures. The festival features lively music and energetic parades.
At the festival, you'll see impressive Nebuta floats--large warrior figures inspired by Japanese mythology. It combines elements of the Chinese Tanabata Festival with local traditions. The festival also includes the Nebuta Nagashi ritual, where lanterns float on rivers and the Nebuta floats are released into the sea. The main event is a parade down Aomori City's main street, showcasing around 20 amazing nebuta floats. The highlight also includes the lively 'Haneto' dance. At the event, you can even rent costumes to join in the fun.
Sendai Tanabata Matsuri:
Held in Sendai, the Tanabata Matsuri is known for its stunning paper decorations that fill the streets. Celebrated from August 6th to 8th each year, this festival honors Tanabata (the Star Festival), based on a Chinese legend about two star-crossed lovers.
During the Sendai Tanabata Festival, the area around Sendai Station is adorned with around 3,000 elaborate decorations. You can enjoy the festival by admiring the colorful displays, watching live performances, and sampling delicious local food from stalls.
The Tanabata decorations at this festival are especially elaborate. Months of preparation go into creating these decorations, which include large wind socks made from Chiyogami paper and bamboo poles, along with seven types of smaller, beautiful ornaments known as the "Seven Decorations" (Nanatsu-Kazari).
Akita Kanto Matsuri:
In Akita, the Kanto Matsuri is famous for its giant bamboo poles covered with lanterns, which participants balance on their shoulders, foreheads, and palms. This festival, celebrating strength and skill, lights up the night sky to ward off evil spirits.
At the Kanto-odori, a 15-minute walk from Akita Station, you'll see around 280 lanterns in 70 groups. Some of these lanterns are 12 meters long, weigh up to 50 kg, and feature 46 smaller lanterns. Skilled performers, known as "Sashite," balance these lanterns on various parts of their bodies.
Yamagata Hanagasa Matsuri:
In Yamagata City, the festival features vibrant dance parades with people wearing traditional Hanagasa (flower hats), which are straw hats decorated with Yamagata's safflower. They dance to lively folk music, making the entire event full of energy and fun.
Each festival in the Tohoku Summer Festival series is unique, but they all celebrate local culture, bring people together, and offer great experiences for both locals and visitors. It's a fantastic opportunity for us, while studying at Iwate University, to dive into and enjoy Japanese culture even more.

เทศกาลฤดูร้อนในโทโฮคุ
หลังจากผ่านพ้นช่วงการสอบได้ผ่านไปแล้ว... ก็ถึงเวลาพักผ่อนและเพลิดเพลินกับเทศกาลวันหยุดฤดูร้อนที่ให้ทุกคนได้ผ่อนคลาย
ในช่วงต้นเดือนสิงหาคม เมืองโมริโอกะจะมีชีวิตชีวาด้วยเทศกาลซันซ่าโอโดริ ซึ่งเริ่มตั้งแต่วันที่ 1 ถึง 4 สิงหาคม ประกอบด้วยการตีกลองไทโกะและการเต้นรำอันสง่างามเพื่อเฉลิมฉลอง โดยเริ่มต้นจากการจัดขึ้นเพื่อเป็นเกียรติแก่เทพเจ้าผู้ปราบปีศาจตามความเชื่อในอดีต ไฮไลท์ของงานอยู่ที่ขบวนพาเหรดซันซ่า ซึ่งมีนักเต้นและมือกลองไทโกะกว่า 30,000 คน ตลอดแนวถนน

เทศกาลทานาบาตะมัตสึริ ซึ่งจัดขึ้นที่เซนได มีชื่อเสียงในด้านการตกแต่งด้วยกระดาษอันน่าทึ่ง เทศกาลนี้เฉลิมฉลองตั้งแต่วันที่ 6 ถึง 8 สิงหาคมของทุกปี โดยจัดขึ้นเพื่อเป็นเกียรติแก่ทานาบาตะ (เทศกาลดวงดาว) ซึ่งมาจากตำนานจีนเกี่ยวกับคู่รักข้ามดาว
ในช่วงเทศกาลเซนไดทานาบาตะ บริเวณรอบๆ สถานีเซนไดจะถูกประดับประดาด้วยของประดับตกแต่งอันวิจิตรงดงามประมาณ 3,000 ชิ้น ให้ได้เพลิดเพลินกับเทศกาลด้วยการชื่นชมการจัดแสดงที่มีสีสัน การแสดงสด และลิ้มลองอาหารท้องถิ่น การตกแต่งทานาบาตะในเทศกาลนี้มีความประณีตเป็นพิเศษ การเตรียมการเป็นเวลาหลายเดือนเพื่อสร้างสรรค์การตกแต่งเหล่านี้ พร้อมด้วยเครื่องประดับขนาดเล็กที่สวยงามเจ็ดประเภทที่เรียกว่า "ของตกแต่งทั้งเจ็ด" (นานะสึ-คาซาริ)
อาคิตะ คันโต มัตสึริ:

ที่คันโต-โอโดริซึ่งอยู่ห่างจากสถานีอาคิตะโดยใช้เวลาเดินเพียง 15 นาที คุณจะเห็นโคมไฟประมาณ 280 ดวงใน 70 กลุ่ม โคมไฟเหล่านี้บางส่วนมีความยาว 12 เมตร หนักได้ถึง 50 กิโลกรัม และมีโคมไฟขนาดเล็กกว่า 46 โคม นักแสดงที่มีทักษะหรือที่รู้จักกันในชื่อ "ซาชิเตะ" จะรักษาสมดุลของโคมไฟเหล่านี้ บนส่วนต่างๆ ของร่างกาย
ยามากาตะ ฮานากาสะ มัตสึริ:
ในเมืองยามากาตะ เทศกาลนี้มีขบวนพาเหรดเต้นรำอันครื้นเครง โดยผู้คนจะสวมฮานากาสะ (หมวกดอกไม้) แบบดั้งเดิม ซึ่งเป็นหมวกฟางที่ประดับด้วยดอกคำฝอยของยามากาตะ เต้นรำไปกับดนตรีพื้นบ้านที่มีชีวิตชีวา ทำให้งานทั้งหมดเต็มไปด้วยพลังและความสนุกสนาน

----The Morioka Handicraft Village not to be missed
In July in Japan, many cities have entered the scorching hot summer days, and the high temperature of 30 degrees Celsius can make people feel lethargic and irritable. Different from this, Morioka, located in the northeast, is particularly cool. What places are worth visiting in Morioka on a summer weekend? My friend and I visited the interesting Morioka Handicraft Village and experienced the charm of the famous Japanese iron kettles up close.
Morioka Handicraft Village is located in Tsunagi, 10km away from Morioka city, and can be reached by bus from Morioka Station in about 30 minutes. It is located next to the beautiful Gosho Lake.

Morioka Handicraft Village can be said to be a base camp for displaying Morioka's traditional crafts and authentic local products. It consists of three areas: the Morioka Regional Industry Promotion Center, the Handicraft Studio, and the Nanbu Magariya House. The biggest attraction is the handicraft workshop area, where you can see actual handicraft workshops including Natural Dyeing, Nanbu Tekki, pottery, bamboo crafts, Nanbu Sembei, Morioka Reimen, etc., including famous local handicrafts.

The most popular thing among tourists in the workshop is the Nanbu Tekki, which is known as "Japan's national treasure traditional craftsmanship". Nanbu Tekki was originally a traditional Japanese tea set, mainly used for boiling water and making tea. It is not only an important part of Japanese Sado culture, but also a treasure in handicraft collections. In the early Edo period, the Nanbu clan, lord of the Morioka domain, hired foundry craftsmen from Kyoto and Koshu (now Yamanashi Prefecture) to make utensils, kicking off the production of Nanbu Tekki. After the 18th century, Sencha tea became popular, and small and exquisite iron kettles with handles entered the homes of ordinary people. This was the prototype of the "traditional iron kettle" that is still made today. Nanbu Tekki is not only a practical living utensil, but also a cultural symbol. The complex production process of Nanbu Tekki, the exquisite craftsmanship and the never-ending spirit of innovation honed by craftsmen day after day have combined to instill people's respect and love for traditional crafts. Every piece of Nanbu Tekki embodies the wisdom and hard work of the craftsman, embodying the spirit of Japanese craftsmanship and the pursuit of quality.

With the development of the times, Nanbu Tekki is also constantly innovating and developing. On the basis of retaining traditional craftsmanship, modern Nanbu Tekki incorporates more modern design elements to adapt to the aesthetic and use needs of modern people.

Iwate University has a long history and fruitful achievements in the study of Nanbu Tekki. As early as 1982 (Showa 57), Professor Hiroshi Horie of the Department of Metal Engineering at Iwate University was engaged in research related to Nanbu Tekki. Later, Professor Hiratsuka Sadato of the Faculty of Engineering at Iwate University continued his research on Nanbu Tekki casting. Today, Professor Takamitsu Tanaka from the field of Design and Media Studies is dedicated to the design and development of Nanbu Tekki for export overseas. Generations of Iwate University scholars have contributed to the development of Nanbu Tekki.
As a cultural treasure passed down for hundreds of years, the Nanbu Tekki has exquisite craftsmanship and unique design style, representing the highest realm of the Japanese craftsman spirit. It is not only popular in Japan, but also won high praise in the international market. In the fast-paced modern life, Nanbu Tekki with its simplicity, durability and beauty, has become an important choice for people to pursue slow life and high quality life. Through the Nanbu Tekki, we can not only feel the charm of traditional crafts, but also enjoy the unique warmth and texture in daily life.
浸润在南部铁器的美好时光
----不容错过的盛冈手作村
7月的日本，很多城市已经进入炎热的暑伏天，动辄30摄氏度的高温让人感到昏沉烦躁。与此不同的是，位于东北部的盛冈还分外清凉。在夏日的周末，我的朋友和我探访了有趣的盛冈手作村，近距离感受闻名遐迩的日本铁壶的魅力。
盛冈手作村位于繋字尾入野，距离盛冈市区10KM，从盛冈站乘坐大巴约30min可以达到。这里紧邻风景秀丽的御所湖。

盛冈手作村可说是展示盛冈传统工艺与地道土产的大本营，由盛冈地域地场产业振兴中心、手作工房与南部曲屋三个区域构成。最大的看点为手作工房区，在此可看到包括蓝染、南部铁器、陶器制品、竹细工、南部煎饼（南部仙贝）、盛冈冷面等实演手作工房，囊括当地著名手工艺。

工房中最受游客欢迎的就是有着"日本国宝级传统工艺"之称的南部铁器。南部铁器原本是传统的日本茶具，主要用于煮水和沏茶。它不仅是日本茶道文化的重要组成部分，也是工艺品收藏中的瑰宝。江户时代初期，盛冈藩主南部氏雇用京都和甲州（现在的山梨县）的铸造工匠制作器物，拉开了生产南部铁器的序幕。18世纪以后，煎茶开始流行，小巧玲珑、配有把手的铁壶走入了寻常百姓家，那就是至今仍在制作的"传统铁壶"的原型。南部铁器不仅是实用的生活器物，更是一种文化象征。南部铁器复杂的制作工序，工艺师日复一日艰苦磨练出的精湛的工艺技术以及永不停歇的创新精神共同浇灌了人们对传统工艺的尊重和热爱。每一件南部铁器都凝聚了工艺师的智慧和心血，体现了日本工匠精神和对品质的追求。

随着时代的发展，南部铁器也在不断创新与发展。现代南部铁器在保留传统工艺的基础上，融入了更多现代设计元素，适应了现代人的审美和使用需求。

岩手大学在南部铁器的研究上，有着悠久的历史和丰硕的成果。早在1982年（昭和57年），时任岩手大学工学部金属工学科的堀江皓教授就在从事与南部铁器相关的研究。后来，岩手大学工学部的平塚貞人教授继续着南部铁器铸造方面的相关研究。如今，还有来自设计与媒体研究领域的田中隆充教授致力于南部铁器有关出口海外的设计和开发。一代又一代岩手大学的学者们，都为南部铁器的发展贡献着力量。
作为传承数百年的文化瑰宝，南部铁器的制作工艺精湛，设计风格独特，代表了日本匠人精神的最高境界。它不仅在日本国内受到欢迎，也在国际市场上赢得了高度评价。在快节奏的现代生活中，南部铁器以其质朴、耐用和美观，成为人们追求慢生活和高品质生活的重要选择。通过南部铁器，我们不仅能感受到传统工艺的魅力，更能在日常生活中享受那份独特的温暖与质感。
