【国際交流PRアソシエイトからの発信★】Ukrainian Workshop

We were honored to welcome Nadiia-sensei, a specially appointed assistant professor at Iwate University and a native of Ukraine, who kindly led the session. With her warm personality and insightful presentation, she introduced us to her home country and shared valuable knowledge about its rich cultural heritage and historical significance. For many attendees, this was their first time learning about Ukraine, a beautiful country located in Eastern Europe, known as the second-largest country on the continent.

Ukraine is often referred to as the "Breadbasket of Europe" due to its rich farmland and large agricultural production, especially wheat. It also has eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites, reflecting its rich cultural and historical heritage. Nadiia-sensei's presentation gave us an overview of her hometown.

The workshop began with group introductions, where participants got to know one another in a friendly and welcoming setting. Then, Nadiia-sensei introduced some basic aspects of the Ukrainian language, including the Cyrillic alphabet. One of the highlights of the session was receiving our own names written in Ukrainian, an exciting and personal touch that made the experience truly special.

Following that, we practiced simple everyday phrases in Ukrainian such as "Hello" (Привіт / pryvit), "How are you?" (Як справи?), and "Goodbye" (Бувай). It was a fun and educational experience, sparking interest among many students to learn more about the language and the culture.

Although the idea of Mother's Day originally came from the United States, Japan has embraced it and added its own cultural touches. The celebration began to spread in Japan during the Taisho era, influenced by Christian churches and women's organizations. Later, in 1936, a well-known confectionery company called Morinaga helped popularize the holiday by organizing events such as a nationwide song contest dedicated to mothers. These activities were widely covered by the media and helped make the day more familiar to people across the country.

The official celebration of Mother's Day in Japan began in 1949, inspired by a touching letter from Anna Jarvis, the founder of Mother's Day in the United States. The letter was sent to Aoyama Gakuin University in Tokyo and moved many people, including missionaries, who helped spread the message of honoring mothers.

One of the most beloved symbols of Mother's Day in Japan is the carnation. As the day approaches, flower shops are filled with red, pink, and purple carnations. These are sold in bouquets or potted arrangements. Each color has its own meaning--red stands for deep love, pink for gratitude and grace, and purple for pride. White carnations represent remembrance and are usually reserved for mothers who have passed away.

Besides flowers, it is common to give small gifts such as clothes, accessories, or handwritten letters to show love and appreciation. Sweets like cakes and cookies are also popular, and many shops offer special gift sets for the occasion. While there is no traditional food for Mother's Day in Japan, many families choose to take their mothers out to a nice restaurant or prepare a meal at home.

In Thailand, Mother's Day is celebrated on August 12th, the birthday of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit. It is traditional to give jasmine flowers, which symbolize purity and the deep, unconditional love between a mother and child.

Although different countries may celebrate Mother's Day on different dates and in different ways, the purpose remains the same: to express love and gratitude to mothers. As an international student at Iwate University, it is eye-opening to learn about these traditions and how they are shared around the world. An allergic reaction to pollen causes hay fever, a fine powder released by certain plants as part of their reproductive cycle. While most people associate pollen allergies with spring, hay fever can occur throughout the year because different types of plants release pollen in different seasons. From January to May, trees from the pine and birch families -- including the Japanese cedar (Sugi) and Hinoki cypress -- are the main sources of pollen. In summer, between June and August, grasses from the rice family take over. Later in the year, from August through December, pollen from the chrysanthemum family, such as ragweed, becomes more common. This cycle means that some people may suffer from hay fever symptoms all year round, depending on which type of pollen they are sensitive to.

The most common time for hay fever to strike is from January to May, during the peak release of cedar and cypress pollen. People with hay fever often experience symptoms like frequent sneezing, a runny nose with clear, watery mucus, itchy and watery eyes, and even a persistent cough or throat irritation. One of the most frustrating parts is that the symptoms can be mistaken for a cold, but they tend to last much longer and do not include a fever. In severe cases, the skin around the nose can become dry, irritated, and even cracked or bleeding from constant sneezing and nose blowing. Sometimes, congestion becomes so intense that people are forced to breathe through their mouths, which only adds to the discomfort.

Thankfully, there are several ways to reduce exposure to pollen and ease the symptoms of hay fever. On days when the weather is sunny and windy, it's best to limit outdoor activities, especially between noon and 3 p.m., which is when pollen levels are typically at their highest. If going outside is unavoidable, wearing a mask can help filter out pollen particles from the air. Sunglasses can protect your eyes, and wearing a hat or scarf can keep pollen from settling in your hair or on your face. When you return home from outside, it's a good idea to brush off your clothes before entering, as pollen can cling to fabric. Taking a shower and changing clothes as soon as you get home can help wash away any remaining pollen and prevent it from spreading indoors. Washing your hands and rinsing your mouth also help remove pollen that may have been inhaled or ingested.

If preventive measures aren't enough, there are medications available to help relieve symptoms. Antihistamines are commonly used to reduce sneezing and itching, while nasal sprays and eye drops can soothe irritated areas. For more persistent or severe cases, it's a good idea to consult with a doctor who can recommend a treatment plan tailored to your needs.

While hay fever can be bothersome, it doesn't have to take the joy out of spring or any other season. With some simple precautions and the right care, it's still possible to enjoy the fresh air, the colorful flowers, and all the beauty that nature has to offer.

ทำความรู้จักกับอาการแพ้ละอองเกสร

One of the most famous sights during the festival is the Ishiwarizakura, or "rock-splitting cherry tree." It's an approximately 400-year-old tree that has grown straight out of a big granite rock in front of the Morioka District Court. It's been standing strong for centuries and is now a national natural monument. Seeing this tree is not only beautiful--it's also inspiring, as it's seen as a symbol of strength and hope.

At the heart of the festival is Morioka Castle Ruins Park. Although the castle itself is long gone, the stone walls and open spaces are perfect for a springtime stroll. When the cherry blossoms bloom in mid-April, the park becomes a stunning mix of pink flowers, green pine trees, and blue skies. You can enjoy the view from above or below the walls, and on a clear day, you can even see Mount Nanshozan (南昌山) in the distance.

In the evening, the park transforms into a magical scene. Lanterns light up the cherry trees, especially around the inner citadel area of Morioka Castle. The soft glow of the lights against the night sky makes it feel like you're walking through a dream. It's the perfect place for a peaceful walk or a romantic evening out.

Another amazing spot is Takamatsu Park, located in the northern part of Morioka. This park is known for its beautiful nature and relaxing atmosphere. In spring, about 1,200 cherry trees bloom around Takamatsu Pond, making it one of the best places in all of Japan to see sakura. During the day, you can enjoy a peaceful walk, take pictures with Mount Iwate in the background, or have a picnic by the pond.

At night, the scene changes once again. Lights are placed around the pond, and their reflections on the water create a calm, dreamlike mood. It's a completely different experience from the daytime--and just as beautiful.

The Morioka Sakura Festival is a perfect way to enjoy spring in Japan. Whether you want to admire the famous Ishiwarizakura, take in the historic views at the castle ruins, or relax by the pond at Takamatsu Park, this festival offers something special for everyone. You can enjoy the blossoms in the sunshine or under the lights--both are unforgettable in their own way. So, if you're planning a trip to go for Hanami or flower viewing, make sure to visit Morioka Sakura Festival. Bring your camera, some snacks, and maybe a friend or two. เมื่อฤดูใบไม้ผลิมาถึง เมืองโมริโอกะก็ถูกแต่งแต้มด้วยดอกซากุระสีชมพูอ่อนบานสะพรั่ง บรรยากาศในช่วงนี้เหมาะสำหรับการออกไปเดินเล่น สูดอากาศบริสุทธิ์ ชมวิวสวยๆ และเฉลิมฉลองการเปลี่ยนผ่านของฤดูกาล และหนึ่งในวิธีที่ดีที่สุดในการดื่มด่ำกับช่วงเวลานี้ ก็คือการไปร่วมงาน เทศกาลซากุระเมืองโมริโอกะ(https://moriokasakurafestival.com) ที่จะจัดขึ้นอีกครั้งในปีนี้ 2025 ณ สองจุดชมซากุระยอดนิยมของเมือง ได้แก่ สวนซากปราสาทโมริโอกะ และ สวนทาคามัตสึ

เทศกาลนี้มีประวัติยาวนานตั้งแต่ช่วงต้นยุคโชวะ และยังคงเป็นที่รักของทั้งชาวเมืองและนักท่องเที่ยวทุกปี ครอบครัว เพื่อนฝูง และนักเดินทางจะมารวมตัวกันเพื่อชมความงามของซากุระ ซึ่งไม่ใช่แค่ดอกไม้ธรรมดา แต่เป็นสัญลักษณ์ของความงามที่แสนเปราะบางและช่วงเวลาอันแสนสั้นของฤดูใบไม้ผลิ

ในช่วงเทศกาล ต้นซากุระจะถูกประดับด้วยโคมไฟยามค่ำคืน แสงไฟนวล ๆ ที่ส่องผ่านกลีบดอกไม้สร้างบรรยากาศโรแมนติกและเงียบสงบ เหมือนอยู่ในฉากฝันตั้งแต่เช้าจรดค่ำ

หนึ่งในไฮไลต์ของเทศกาลคือ ต้นอิชิวาริซากุระ หรือ "ต้นซากุระผ่าหิน" อายุกว่า 400 ปี ที่เติบโตขึ้นจากรอยแยกของหินแกรนิตหน้าศาลแขวงโมริโอกะ ต้นไม้ต้นนี้ไม่เพียงแต่สวยงามเท่านั้น แต่ยังเป็นสัญลักษณ์ของความแข็งแกร่งและความหวัง ได้รับการยกย่องให้เป็นอนุสรณ์สถานทางธรรมชาติระดับชาติอีกด้วย
