Hatsumode Experience

(初詣体験)

As the clock neared 11:00 p.m. on December 31, just about an hour away from the new year, people started gathering at the Hachimangu Shrine. It's that time of the year, and I decided to visit for Hatsumode, the first shrine visit of the year. The shrine was alive with joy, and as I stepped into the front area, a delightful sight awaited: a bunch of Yatai, those interesting Japanese mobile food stalls, serving up treats like yakisoba, takoyaki, taiyaki, dango, and more. It was the perfect setup to taste some delicious bites before stepping into the new day.

When it got close to midnight, a line formed with people excited to get blessings from the shrine.Once you reached the shrine, everyone bowed at the Torii, a traditional Japanese gate, and then went to Chōzu-ya or temizu-ya (手水舎) to wash their hands really well with these steps.

The right hand dipped the Hishaku dipper into the water and splashed some onto the left hand. Then, switch the dipper to the left hand and do the same with the right hand. Consequently, put the dipper back in the right hand again. Scoop up water and pour it into the palm of your left hand, then delicately bring water to the mouth for a rinse, avoiding direct sipping. After that, the left hand had another wash, similar to the first one. In the end, the ladle's handle received a final cleanup. It was placed upside down, letting the water flow down. With cleansed hands and hearts, we got in line to go into the temple. It seems that the cold weather didn't spoil everyone's mood.

When it was midnight, the bell rang. as a notification to enter the new year. It was time to pay homage to the Haiden (拝殿) for good fortune on New Year's Day, with the following steps:

1. Put in a coin for the donation and ring the bell.
2. Straighten and bow two times.
3. Clap your hands twice, then place your hands on your chest and pray for blessings.
4. Finally, bow once before stepping back to finish.

Beside the main chapel, Omamori, the Japanese amulets beckoned, each style offering a chance to personalize good fortune based on preferences, birthdates, or wishes. They say these amulets should be replaced every New Year's day for continued luck, and the ones from the past year should be returned to the shrine.

As the visit came to an end, a parting bow at the torii facing the main chapel marked the end of a simple and satisfying experience, ready to embrace the upcoming year. I really like the Hatsumode tradition during this time. It brings such a peaceful and enjoyable vibe. I feel great and all set for the new year. The Japanese culture's way of starting the year with this simple ritual is impressive. It gives us a chance to look back and get ready for what's ahead in the coming year. Hope this year will be a fantastic and joy-filled New Year for everyone! あけましておめでとうございます (Akemashite omedetō gozaimasu)!

日本の年賀状

　日本の年賀状は、年末から新年にかけての大切な伝統的な文化です。一般的に、12月中旬から年明けの初めにかけて、人々は年賀状を書いたり受け取ったりすることで新年の挨拶や感謝の気持ちを伝えます。

　年賀状は多様なデザインや種類があります。一般的なデザインとしては、干支（十二支の動物）が描かれたり、富士山や門松（しめ飾り）、縁起物の鶴や亀が使われたりします。また、写真を使ったり、自分でデザインしたりすることもあります。これらのデザインには、新年の幸せや繁栄を願う意味が込められています。

　年賀状には手書きのメッセージが添えられます。このメッセージには、新年の抱負や願い事、過去一年の感謝や近況報告などが含まれます。特に近年では、デジタル技術の進歩により、年賀状をオンラインで作成し送ることも増えてきましたが、手書きのメッセージが伝統的な魅力とされています。

　今年は日本に来たばかりで、たくさんの先生や友達に出会いました。新年が近づくにつれて、感謝の気持ちを伝えたくて、年賀状を送ることにしました。最初は、裏に素敵なデザインが印刷された年賀状を購入しましたが、その後、白い年賀状を買って、自分でカートゥーン風の龍を描きました。それぞれの人に特別な祝福を贈りたかったのです。

　しかし、送った後にフォーマットを間違えたことに気付きました。住所と祝福の言葉を同じ面に書いてしまい、郵便配達員が見たらたいへんだったでしょうね。失敗はしましたが、それがちょっとした笑い話になりました。

　たくさんの先生や友達からのお返事が届き、とても嬉しかったです。皆さん美しい言葉で私の祝福に返事をくれました。中には新年の計画や願い事を共有してくれた方もいて、その手紙は温かさと思いやりにあふれ、私を幸せな気持ちにさせてくれました。

　「新年快乐！あけましておめでとう！昨年はお世話になりました。今年もよろしくお願いします！春節の動画頑張ろうね♡」（友達Aさん）

　「明けましておめでとう！！いちごちゃん2023年はいろいろと大活躍でしたね。また、新しい目標に向けて頑張ってくださいね。今年もよろしく」（先生Bさん）

　年賀状は日本の人々にとって、家族や友人、同僚、取引先などとのつながりを大切にする機会でもあります。年賀状を受け取ることは、相手からの思いやりや温かい気持ちを感じることができる特別な瞬間となります。今年も日本の年賀状という特別な経験を得られて、とてもうれしかったです。

日本的年贺状

日本的年贺状（新年贺卡）是一项从年末一直到新年的重要传统文化活动。通常在12月中旬到新年初，人们通过写贺卡或收到贺卡来表达新年的问候和感激之情。

贺卡有各种各样的设计和类型。常见的设计包括绘有生肖（十二生肖动物）、富士山、门松（年节摆设）、吉祥物的鹤和乌龟等。此外，人们也可能使用照片，或者自己设计图案。这些设计都蕴含着对新年幸福和繁荣的祝愿。

贺卡通常附有手写的祝福语。这些祝福语包括对新年的期望、心愿、对过去一年的感激以及近况报告等。尤其是近年来，随着数字技术的进步，越来越多的人选择在线制作和发送贺卡，但手写的祝福仍然被视为一种传统魅力的体现。

我今年刚刚来到日本，认识了很多老师和朋友。随着新年的临近，我想表达我的感激之情，于是决定寄送贺卡。一开始，我购买了印有漂亮设计的贺卡，但后来我买了纯白的贺卡，自己画了卡通风格的龙。我想给每个人送上特别的祝福。

可是，寄出后我才意识到格式出错了。我把地址和祝福语写在了同一面，如果邮递员看到的话肯定会很困扰。虽然失败了，但某种意义上也成了一个小小的笑话吧。

我非常高兴收到了许多老师和朋友的回信，大家用美丽的词汇回应了我的祝福。有些人还分享了新年的计划和心愿，那些信充满了温暖和关怀，读来感到十分幸福。

对于日本人来说，年贺状是与家人、朋友、同事、业务伙伴等保持联系的重要机会。接收贺卡是一种特殊时刻，可以感受到对方的体贴和温馨。今年很开心体验了日本的年贺状的文化。　

（報告）英語で教授法を学ぶFD研修を開催しました　Short-term FD training for faculty and staff held

岩手大学では、国際教育センターが主催となり協定校であるカナダのサスカチュワン大学グエナ・モス・ティーチング＆ラーニング・センターのAditi Garg先生を講師に迎え、英語によるFD研修プログラムを開催しました。対象は岩手大学の教職員及び大学院生といわて高等教育コンソーシアムの構成大学教職員とし、研修には１１月７日から９日までの4日間でのべ79名が参加しました。

研修内容はアクティブラーニングの他、グループワークの効果的な導入方法、学びのユニバーサルデザイン（UDL)、リフレクションとフィードバックといった内容が提供されました。

参加者からは「アクティブラーニングの手法やリフレクションの方法について新に得た学びが多く、大変有益だった」「またこのような研修に参加し自分の授業に生かしていきたい」「久しぶりに英語での授業を受け、聞き取りが大変だったが良い刺激やモチベーションになった」といった感想が聞かれました。

同FD研修は平成28年度から始めコロナ禍の期間を除き今年で４回目の対面実施となります。岩手大学では、協定校との交流事業の一環及びに教職員のティーチングスキルと英語力の向上を目指し今後も継続してFD研修を実施する予定です。

Iwate University International Education Center hosted an FD training program in English with Ms. Aditi Garg of the Gwenna Moss Centre for Teaching and Learning at the University of Saskatchewan, Canada, our partner university. The target participants were faculty and staff of Iwate University and Graduate School students, and faculty and staff from universities in Iwate Prefecture. 79 people in total participated in the four-day training from November 7 to 9.

In addition to active learning, the training offered included effective ways to introduce group work, universal design for learning (UDL), and reflection and feedback.

Participants commented that "I learned a lot of new active learning methods and reflection methods, which was very useful," "I would like to participate in such training again and make the most of it in my own classes," and "It has been a while since I took a class in English, and although it was difficult to understand what was being said, it was a good stimulus and motivation for me. I had not taken a class in English for a long time.

This is the fourth in-person FD training session since the program began in 2008, except for the Corona Disaster period. Iwate University plans to continue FD training as part of its exchange programs with partner universities and to improve the teaching skills and English proficiency of faculty and staff.
